Growing Old, Growing Free

By Lily Bradshaw July 05, 2024 Senior Living

The freedom getting older brings can be exhilarating. We have worked all our lives, maybe raised a family, cared for others. We have cooked, cleaned, taxied, wiped noses, kissed scrapped knees, and hugged away tears. It has been a joy, a real pleasure, but now that we are older, we have a little time to do things for ourselves. And what wonderful adventures there are to be had!

Three years ago, I moved back to England and couldn’t believe the price of property. It had truly exploded in the two (pandemic) years I had been away, and I found myself priced out of the market. It was a little scary, and for a while, I was wondering whether I should have come back.

Serendipity

I decided to temporarily rent a little holiday shack (aptly named Serendipity) on the beach for a season, and absolutely loved it! Breakfast on the veranda, lunch on the beach, and dinner on the barbecue, what more could anyone want!?

From my little wooden veranda, I could hear the sound of the waves as they lapped against the shore. If I stood on the sand dune, I could see the moon reflecting its golden glow on the ripples of the water. I witnessed magnificent sunrises, and sunsets so vibrant they took my breath away. I had my little dog for company and life was pretty perfect.

Everything Changed

Sadly, it didn’t last long as four months later, I lost her. She was 14 and had always been active and happy, but it was a huge blow, and for the first time in my life, I felt lonely. I stopped going to the beach as it was filled with people playing with their dogs, which meant I missed talking with others. It was so hard, and I didn’t know what to do.

One night, feeling a little sorry for myself, and after a couple of glasses of wine, I found myself booking a cruise to Norway. I always thought I wasn’t a ‘cruise’ type of person. How wrong I was! I absolutely loved it and, although I didn’t know it then, this was the start of an adventure that saw me solo travelling to many incredible places and having the time of my life.

A few weeks later, I took another cruise, this time to the Mediterranean, visiting France, Spain, Portugal and some Mediterranean islands. Slowly, it dawned on me that this is what I wanted to do, and the following year I embarked on a challenge – to travel full time for one year, for the same price (or hopefully less) than renting a property and living in England.

Setting Myself a Huge Challenge

My travels took me to much of Europe, including the beautiful island of Madeira. I swam with turtles in Barbados, danced in the rain in The Rain Forest. I stayed at a Buddhist monastery, cooking and cleaning for the Monks, swam in The Blue Lagoon in Iceland, slid down a mountain in a basket and drank from an ice glass in an ice bar in Norway.

I have met so many wonderful people and had the most incredible time and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. Life is a great adventure and just because we are older doesn’t mean we are not a part of it. In fact, with our wisdom and experience we are a huge part of it.

If you would like to read a little more of my adventures the first three chapters of my book, Growing Old, Growing Free are on my blog. The entire book is available here.

I’m doing exactly this. 9 years ago I left the south of England and moved 200mls north to be close to my grandchildren but during the pandemic years my daughter and I fell out and I was forbidden to see the grandchildren again. That was 4yrs ago and I have missed all of the joy of their early childhood. What would I do now? Having spent my whole life in the travel industry I’d been lucky to see most of the world but there are still places I have wanted to visit. So I travelled around Thailand for a month. Rented an airbnb for a month in southern Spain this year and also last year. Travelled to India for a two week tour of the Golden Triangle to see the foothills of the Himalayas and the glorious Taj Mahal. Tiger spotting in Rathanbore. Home for a week then off again to spend two months in Malaysia. My next adventure will be cruising around South America. My intention is to stay in Europe for six months of the year and then SE Asia where my son lives for the remainder of the year. I will eventually leave England for good. My heart was torn in two when I was not allowed to be a grandma to those two beautiful children but although it has been difficult I have found a way to continue to love my life. I am starting to make a digital story book for my grandchildren so that they will get to know their grandma one day.

Hi Dolly, Thank you for joining in. You really are a kindred spirit! I know what happened with your daughter must be difficult (though sadly, seems to be coming more common) but you have made the very best out of a difficult situation, and are living a fabulous life. There are places on your list I haven’t been to and you have inspired me to get travelling again, its been six weeks! Lily x

I’m going on a cruise to Alaska in August. First cruise in over 15 years. Can’t wait to go and book another one! I retired then started up as a Vacation Consultant so I could save money on travel in my senior years. Best decision I ever made!

Hi Carolyn, thanks for joining the conversation.Alaska!! Lucky you, it is right at the top of my list :) It seems like you have made a very wise move by becoming a Vacation Consultant! Lily x

This sounds great! Can you recommend preferred cruise lines for solo travel? Is there any way to find out which ones offer solo travelers a break? I ask because when I went on the Queen Mary 2, it was fabulous, but more expensive as a solo traveler—the cabin price (paid by me in full) was not split with a cabin mate as on previous trips (with husband).

Plenty of cruises are geared to solo cruisers now. Contact a travel agent. I work for expedia in Canada and it has enabled me to travel more at a discount. I’d be happy to refer you.

Hi Liz, thank you for your message. I wish there was a cruise line I could recommend but I haven’t found one to be honest (please anyone let me know if you know of one). I do it by researching. Its funny you mention the QM2 because I was on there about 15 years ago and met a lady who had paid 10% of what I had. This is what started my research into travelling on a budget! Lily x

Windstar is wonderful

I still have my wonderful husband….third time is the charm…thankfully. The idea of travel has always appealed to me, and I could easily do the solo thing. But my husband does not like the cruise/flying experience, so we compromised. We hook up our travel trailer and go for 2-3 months at a time in the US. We are out about half the year, and those road trips are full of exploring and freedom. We love it!

Hi Jeanie, Thanks for joining in. Well that sounds like a fabulous compromise to me :). I would love to do that. Have a lovely Sunday! Lily x

I would love to travel a lot, but limited funds after a divorce from an abuser. I don’t have the funds. I’m trying to sell my house and downsize, which would free up some money but right but now it’s very difficult in this economy and up upcoming election.
I was supposed to travel with my husband. They say you make plans. God laughs. My life had been turned upside down. I’m 64. I just don’t have motivation or desire to do much other than my responsibilities.
