This morning I wrapped up an article about a new friend, Susan McNamee. Susan, 67, lives in Denver. In her teens, all she ever wanted to do was be a mom.
She was a (self-described) “unpopular pudge” in high school. As was common at the time, she got married right after graduation and immediately had two kids.
After several moves with her family, she found herself living in California in 1968. The beginning of her true life trajectory began when she was pregnant.
A close friend with more funds punted for lessons with a personal trainer. Step classes, boxing, they all began to shift Susan’s idea of what she could do with her body, which had never been her friend.
Susan was also training at home with the inimitable Jack Lalanne and later Jane Fonda videos.
Not to stay at home forever, she began working in the nascent cable industry. She rose through the ranks at Lifetime Network, then became Red Robin’s national marketing director.
At 40, Susan began running. She just wanted something else. She began with a local running group called A Snail’s Pace, which allowed her to not only take baby steps, but also to find a family of like-minded folks who shared her love of physical movement. This was the start of her finding her emotional home.
That “something else” swiftly evolved into marathons. In fact, Susan started what would become a lifetime habit of training for the hardest, a marathon, which would make the odd 5k or 10k race a breeze. When she signed up to run a marathon, that was the motivation to put the time in.
During the years she and her family lived in California, her husband supported her runs, but due to a heart condition wasn’t able to participate. In the meantime, Susan began to blossom.
In 2002, the family moved to Colorado for her job. By this time, Susan was ready for a break from marathons, and turned to bicycles.
She found one for $400. She laughs about it now, but at the time she was shocked at the price. (Nowadays, racing bicycles can easily run up to $10-15K). Today she has five bicycles for racing.
Susan also hired a personal trainer, who was an Ironman veteran. Good thing too, because the first time she took a group ride she was in for a shock.
“We were sitting at a light. The moment the light turned green, everyone else was GONE. I was sitting there in the dust.”
Not for long. Soon, Susan was competing in lengthy Colorado mountain bike races. Many, if not most, are fund raisers for excellent causes. She would enter a race, which would then push her to train hard.
By 2010, Susan was ready to return to the marathon world. In just a few years, she ran the New York City, Chicago, Marine, and Colorado Marathons.
And burned out, as we sometimes do.
But she needed movement. So, she turned to the pool. Well, of course she did. The first time, she could barely make a single lap. But given Susan’s nature, she was soon no longer hanging onto the kayaks which are placed in the water for exhausted swimmers. She was ready to start triathlons.
She was 60 at the time.
Susan signed on for the Wisconsin Triathlon when her first try with the Ironman flamed out. Her trainer grinned and told her, “That’s the third hardest in the country.”
But she persisted – and finished. In the meantime, she started up a performance nutrition company in 2014, and began nutritional coaching for athletes.
As someone who had received coaching from multiple sources, Susan wanted to give back and be of service to others in her community. A community that loved her back, for now she was exulting in being popular in the world she had entered in her mid-40s.
However, no amount of achievement can prepare us for life’s shocks. Her husband of 29 years filed for divorce in 2017, leaving her “in a fetal position for three months.”
Yet, barely six weeks after her divorce, Susan had found a fellow athlete on Match.com.
Susan has qualified and run in two International Ironman Half Marathons in 2018 and 2019. This is her joy. These days, she has a partner with whom she travels, runs, and bikes at events all over the world. Her performance continues to improve with age.
Effervescent, happy, this one-time I-only-want-to-be-a-mom woman is now an international triathlete. She doesn’t always win, but that’s not the point. She’s winning at life, and helping others do the same.
It doesn’t matter when you start doing what you love. All that matters is that you begin it, and follow your heart. Susan is the perfect example of a woman living her dream – and setting an example for others to follow.

While I think Susan has accomplished some wonderful things this article just makes me wish I’d started decades ago.
The article didn’t inspire me at all it made me feel sad.
Susan was already fit she wasn’t starting something brand new at 60.
Whilst I do believe you can start and get fit at any age this was not an example this.
Or did I miss the point. was it the new man.
I have my hobbies, church activities and the quest to get my Ph.D. At sixty-nine, I want to enjoy my life, remain as healthy as possible. Work a little to keep some income coming in. Taking it one step at a time.

Most articles are inspirational – not this one. Susan is “doing her thing” – damn the original husband and two children – she is “having her desired life”. Good for her. She’s basically accomplishing nothing with her competitive life except a personal feeling of achievement. I laugh at those in their 60’s “finding themselves”. I am 91 – look at the self searching of the 60’s as a new phenomena.
And yet, who cares how old you are when you “find yourself”? Some of us are late bloomers.

I agree. I am 65.5 and divorced after 32 years. Susan’s name is mentioned to much in this article. Being in a fetal position for 4 months after a 29 year marriage and meeting your forever man on match.Com 3 months later is not inspirationa to me. I am trying to make my life work step by step , not running a marathon to do it.
Trying not to judge, but Jeesh! All of us who’ve ‘done the work’ after a long marriage ends, have MOSTLY come to understand a little alone time is recommended. Again, I’m not saying absolutely, but if I would have jumped into another relationship within 3-4 years after my 35 year marriage ended, it would have been disastrous. As far as her need to keep moving, I really get that. I’m 68, began running again during the divorce process about 6 years ago, as well as amping up the bicycling. It’s completely changed my life. I feel better now than I did at 40. Getting fit and strong truly does wonders for all other parts of your life, if you’re so inclined.
yes, 62 here. i think many of the elders going on triathlons are cool. but some of us did that when we were younger. some of us were active and broken on that wheel a bit. this is not the norm. and, yes, a body that was never put through rigorous physical tasks probably has few scars, breaks, or hurt joints.
being a ‘pudge’ her whole life and now taking on triathlons is questionable. does it mention here if she has a doctor’s assistance while she takes on what she admits she knew nothing about? even if she has few old injuries, older bodies injure worse and more easily …
to hold this up in your magazine like it’s a goal without any marked cautions is a little careless of the reality of a normal 60+ female (usually on this site) body imo

I respectfully disagree. Susan has supported others by doing her races – article mentioned she many of the events she participated in were charity fund raising events..
Susan also gave back with a nutritional company.
Biggest question – what is wrong if she did improved herself JUST for herself?
Ms. Winifred, I applaud you for the tenacity of spirit and health to reach age 91. I would love to read your nuggets of wisdom about self-care which replenished your strength to care for others.

At the age of 62, my health sucks and I have zero motivation to continue my writing career, often feeling like why bother, it’s too late. I love this and it inspires me to keep going and find new passions to explore. Thank you!

please get a baseline of your health with your doctor before beginning a serious exercise regimen
i have found pilates to be helpful and i can modify the moves to where i am, mobility and strength-wise. it’s similar to yoga in places to my eye, but there are some very easy free introductory videos out there Christina Kirkland and Jessica Valant are two names that i’ve found to be rife with videos amenable to what i need. i’m not going to post their links, as i don’t want to seem like an advertiser. just an old broad who has found that this helps me do – just a little – whether i’m motivated or not. and sometimes i get my blood moving to actually find the motivation to do ‘a little more’. and sometimes not. :-)
