The Power of Resilience After 60: Advice from a Cancer Survivor and Model-Turned-Author

By Sixty and Me July 22, 2019 Interviews

Resilience is an incredible skill that every woman should endeavor to acquire. It’s the key to having a good life. My guest today is a woman who knows so much about the power of resilience – Valerie Ramsey.

Valerie used to be a stay-at-home mother of six until she decided to pursue her dream job in her late 50s. From then onwards, her life has been full of surprises. She modeled, authored several successful books, and more importantly, she survived cancer.

Consider Your Challenges as Opportunities

Don’t let life’s challenges knock you down. Think of them as opportunities for growth. If you do, you can learn more about yourself and realize the strengths you never knew you had. Then, take what you’ve learned, and share it with others who are going through similar ordeals.

Look Forward to the Positive Aspects of Your Life

You need to have a light at the end of the tunnel, something positive to look forward to during tough times. It could be anything that excites you and keeps you going. For instance, it could be an upcoming vacation with your grandchildren or a new hobby that you’ve always been interested in trying.

Find New Strength from Past Challenges

Take a step back and remind yourself of the challenges you’ve overcome. Think about how you got through those tough ordeals. Use the insights you’ve gained to muster the strength to move forward.

Believe in Yourself

Trust in your capabilities and acknowledge your capacity to succeed – and you will. The mind is truly fascinating. If you believe that you’re capable of overcoming any challenge, you will be able to do so. Hence, put a little more trust in yourself and your abilities.

Surround Yourself with Positive People

Welcome happiness and laughter into your life. Surround yourself with people who love you, genuinely care about you, and make you laugh. Be a part of a community who understands you and lifts you up through the most challenging times of your life.

Love Yourself

Take good care of yourself as you grow older. Be a little more kind to your mind, body, and soul. Make sure to practice good nutrition. Sleep well, and exercise regularly. Again, nurture the positive aspects of your life that feed your soul and make you feel alive.

Help Others and Show Gratitude

Be thankful for all that you’ve achieved and overcome. Be thankful for the woman that you’ve become. Then, share your stories to inspire other women to fight their own battles.

Own Your Power and Responsibility

You alone have the power and responsibility to pick yourself up and turn your life around. No one else has that power – only you do. Acknowledge this truth and commit to it. Once you do, you will have the inner strength to face any challenge.
