When my children were young, I used to love to read Dr. Seuss books to them. There was something about the strange characters and wonderful worlds that sent all of us into uncontrollable fits of giggling. It’s a shame that, as adults, we are expected to be so serious. It’s almost as if we forget how to appreciate the silly, nonsensical moments in life.
I don’t know about you, but, one of the things that I enjoy most about being over 60 is that I no longer care what other people think. Personally, I think life after 60 is an opportunity to regress a bit and nurture our inner child.
In the words of Dr. Seuss, “I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of the telescope and enables you to laugh at life’s realities.”
No matter what life after 60 brings, let’s remind ourselves not to take everything so seriously. Let’s go to the park and eat ice-cream with a plastic spoon. Let’s go to the movies once in a while and sit and giggle along with the little girls at the latest Disney cartoon. Let’s write nonsensical poetry and post it funky paper throughout the house. Let’s embrace nonsense!
Do you think that we tend to take ourselves too seriously as adults? What is one thing that you used to do as a child that you wish you were still doing today? What is stopping you? Please join the conversation.
Here’s a short video that I recorded on the topic of embracing nonsense to get more from life after 60.
