Olivia Newton-John, who turns 70 today, on September 26th, had a fascinating start to her life. She was born in Cambridge, England, to a Welsh father, Brinley (“Bryn”) Newton-John, and a Berlin-born mother. Her mother, Irene Helene, was the eldest child of the Nobel Prize-winning atomic physicist Max Born.
She moved from England to Melbourne, Australia, with her family, when she was five. By the age of 15, she was singing and cutting records. Olivia went on to have a fascinating career, over 4 decades. Along the way, she faced a number of personal challenges, which make her an even stronger role model for women in their 60s.
From a career perspective, Olivia is an absolute tour de force. She has sold over 100 million albums and won 4 Grammy Awards and a number of People’s Choice Awards. Her hit “Physical” reached the number 6 position on their Top 100 Songs of All Time list and was called “The Sexiest Song of All Time”. She even performed for the Pope and at the Sydney Olympics!
Outside of her music, Olivia has faced a number of challenges. Perhaps the most difficult of these was her battle with cancer. Just recently, Olivia Newton-John has revealed she is again battling cancer, her third diagnosis in three decades.
Being the incredible woman that she is, Olivia used her experience to become an advocate for breast cancer awareness. She claimed that self-examination saved her life and launched Liv Aid, a breast self-examination kit to help women to perform their self-exams correctly.
Olivia is passionate about helping people to live healthy, happy lives at any age. This is one of the reasons that I think she is such a good example for us to follow.
Like the women in our community, Olivia is constantly reinventing herself. One of the projects that she helped to bring to life is the release of the “Pink and Blue for Two” charity wine, a percentage of the sales from which goes to breast cancer charities.
Today, Olivia Newton-John is 70 years old. Let’s wish her a very happy birthday and send her positive thoughts as she bravely deals with her latest fight with cancer. Happy 70th birthday, Olivia!
