If you look at the way that people in their midlife and older are portrayed in the media, you would be forgiven for thinking that life ends at 60. There are exceptions – usually in comedies designed to show the humorous side of aging – but, for the most part, life after 60 is shown to be a time of turning invisible and aging gracefully.
That’s why I love Zoomer Magazine. This magazine challenges stereotypes and encourages men and women of our generation to “embrace life with experience, confidence, and passion.” Their writing is upbeat and intelligent, inspiring and practical. In a world filled with aging stereotypes, Zoomer Magazine stands out as a breath of fresh air.
You might wonder why I’m talking about an online magazine on the Sixty and Me blog. After all, what does a magazine like Zoomer have to do with friendship after 60? The answer is – more than you think!
One of my strong personal beliefs is that making friends starts with yourself. You can’t expect other people to love you until you respect and care for yourself. Also, you also won’t make many friends sitting around the house, watching TV.
The best way to make friends is to live for your passions.
Publications like Zoomer and Sixty and Me, offer a refreshingly positive model for what life in your 50s and 60s can be like.
Zoomer Magazine, and their sister site Everything Zoomer, were designed for a Canadian audience, so, you may not get every joke or reference (or their coverage of the U.K. Royals). But, for the most part, their publications are for anyone who wants to get the most from life after 60.
I hope that you will take a few minutes to check our Everything Zoomer today and let me know what you think. We need as many positive examples of how to get the most from life in our 50s and 60s as possible.
What are your favorite magazines and websites for people over 60? Do you agree that making friends after 60 requires you to follow your dreams and passions? Why or why not?
