Few female performers have influenced other women more than Tina Turner. Her music transcends generations, but, for baby boomers, she will always hold a special place in our hearts. We followed her career through the decades. In return, she inspired us to be strong, proud and independent women.
Beyond Turner’s broad appeal as an artist, she also had a way of creating songs that we could relate to on a deeply personal level. I know so many women who say that her music got them through an especially hard breakup.
In my case, I have a soft spot for Proud Mary and Simply the Best. Proud Mary always reminded me that every struggle has a silver lining. It is deeply powerful and shows that her charisma is about much more than her looks. Simply the Best was played every year at the global meeting for a company that I used to work for. It still gives me goose bumps every time I listen to it. It is like a portal to that part of my life.
Tina Turner has just turned 76 and I am reminded of the powerful impact that this wonderful lady has had on the women in our community. So, I thought that it might be fun to take an audio journey through her greatest hits.
The question is – where should I start? After all, Turner has 63 albums to her name. If I listen to them all, I would get absolutely nothing done for weeks! I also realize that, while I’m a Tina Turner fan, I may have missed some of her best songs.
