Contrary to popular opinion, not every woman over 60 is a needle-wielding, double-knitting, sweater-making machine. Some women, like myself, never learned how to knit when we were younger. Then, as family life took over, we simply didn’t get the chance to pick up a pair of knitting needles. There was simply too much to do!
Now, in our 60s, many of us are finding ourselves once again attracted to the colored yarns and fabulous lace, cables and linen we first viewed from a distance in our younger years. After all, knitting keeps your brain sharp, reduces stress, develops your fine motor skills helps you to stay social. What’s not to love?
The question is, where should we start? What is the best way to learn how to knit when you are already at an age that most people expect you to be a knitting goddess?
Personally, I have decided to embrace technology and use online videos to improve my knitting skills. So, to get started, I went hunting for knitting videos for complete beginners. Fortunately, I found some amazing options on Craftsy!
My hope is to be able to work my way through this over the next month and then turn to more intermediate topics. If you have always been interested in knitting, I hope that you will join me.
Here are 3 amazing knitting videos for complete beginners.
Stefanie Japel is the author of many knitting books, including “Fitted Knits: 25 Designs for the Fashionable Knitter.”
In her online course, Stefanie covers many of the basics that beginning knitters need help with. She starts by explaining the types of materials that are involved in knitting and gives a demonstration of casting on.
Then, she proceeds to cover stiches, blocking, weaving ends, additional casting on methods, garment shaping, pattern reading and much more! That’s more than 6-hours of HD video!

One of the first items that beginner knitters learn to create is a scarf. In her beginner video series, Caddy Melville focuses on helping new knitters to build their confidence, one stitch at a time.
During the series, which spans 6 videos, Caddy walks through the entire process, from beginning to end. First, she starts by talking about materials. Then, she takes her viewers through the process of creating their first scarf. Along the way, she identifies areas that beginning knitters often make mistakes.
This is definitely a shorter series than the previously mentioned “Knit Lab” series. However, the customer feedback for this series is amazing.
As of the writing of this article, “Learn to Knit: My First Scarf” has a 4.8/5.0 rating and the women who have already watched it can’t stop talking about it.

Last, but definitely not least, on our list of online knitting courses for beginners is Stefanie Japel’s, “Hats Four Ways: Circular Knit Lab.” Yes, this is the same Stefanie who was behind the “Knit Lab” project that we mentioned earlier.
If you feel like you have already mastered the art of creating simple scarves, Stephanie’s hats offer a natural next step.
Over the course of 5 hours and 15 videos, Stefanie demonstrates how to use four circular knitting techniques to create three unique types of hats. These include the “sweet pea,” “wheeler” and “rosie.”
