I love Carole King. For over 50 years, she has created classic songs that touch us deep inside. She also ignited the careers of countless articles who made her songs their own. Today is Carole King’s 75th birthday and I’d love to wish her all the best on behalf of the Sixty and Me community!

Let’s take a quick look back at some of her accomplishments and celebrate her birthday with her.

A Star is Born

Carole King was born in New York, on February 9^th, 1942. Through her passion and resilience, she went on to become one of the greatest female songwriters of all time. Beyond that, she also became the voice of the baby boomer generation.

King wrote some of her most iconic songs in collaboration with her first husband, Gerry Goffin. Some of the songs in this category include “One Fine Day,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” “You Got a Friend” and “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman.” Which one is your favorite?

Over the course of her amazing career, she wrote over 100 hits for artists including The Monkees, the Everly brothers, Aretha Franklin and James Taylor. Amazingly, these 100 hits were just a fraction of the more than 400 songs that she wrote, or co-wrote, in total.

One of the songs that I believe has special relevance to the Sixty and Me community is “Beautiful.” In it, she said:

You got to get up every morning with a smile on your face – and show the world all the love in your heart. Then people gonna treat you better, you’re gonna find, yes, you will that you’re beautiful as you feel.

We all know that perceptions of beauty change as we get a little older. Fortunately, we also have quite a bit of control over how we see ourselves – and how we engage with the world. We do not have to be invisible. We can let our inner beauty shine.

Life is Never Perfect

Perhaps due to, in part, her sensitive and loving nature, Carole King found herself to be unlucky in love. She married 4 times and experiences well-documented abuse over the years. Her autobiography “A Natural Woman” tells her story. Through it all, she persevered. She really is an inspiration so many women.

Now, King is Focused on Making the World a Better Place

Carole King has had a successful career. Now, she is shifting her attention to the environment and the political issues that she cares about. Like many of the women in our community, she is moving on from the career that gave her stability in the past and is exploring her new passions.

King has received many awards over the years. She was even nominated as a Kennedy Center honoree. Now, there is a new musical launching in New York, called “Beautiful – the Carole King Musical.” I can’t think of a better tribute for this amazing lady. Take a look and let us know what you think.
