7 Meaningful 90th Birthday Gift Ideas

By Margaret Manning August 04, 2020 Lifestyle

Do you know someone who will be blowing out 90 candles on their birthday cake? Ok, it’s probably not a good idea to put 90 candles on a birthday cake, but you know what I mean.

Celebrating 90 years of life is quite a big deal. The person probably doesn’t need any more trinkets or household items at this point in their life. It can be difficult to find the perfect gift for the birthday girl or guy.

I get it. That’s why I spent a lot of time thinking about it and finding ways to commemorate such a special occasion with something unique and meaningful. The result is this list of seven 90th birthday gift ideas that are sure to light up your friend or family member’s special day.

Birthday Messages

Let’s face it, families are spread out across the world nowadays, and not everyone can attend birthday parties. Chances are, if you live to be 90 years old, you have children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and possibly great-great-grandchildren.

Add that to the many friends accumulated in your lifetime, and that makes for A LOT of people.

With access to the Internet now you can create a truly special birthday card. Prepare in advance and ask family and friends to send you their birthday wishes for the celebrated 90-year-old. These can be handwritten or sent through email, text, or even video.

You can use an app like Canva to put together all the birthday wishes and show the birthday gal or guy when their special day rolls around.

You can also print out a copy so they can keep the birthday wishes with them. Canva is easy to learn and free to use if you upload your own photos. You can create the birthday card from your smartphone, electronic tablet, or your computer.

Mirror On 1930: Newspaper Yearbook

Mirror On 1930: Newspaper Yearbook

Newspapers are not what they used to be. Many of us get our news from the Internet nowadays. Your loved one probably remembers the paper print delivered to the house by the paper delivery boy every morning many moons ago.

This series of books showcases 120 of the front covers from any given year in history. Choose the year that your special person was born and offer them a unique and memorable experience through time.

Sleep Machine

With new technology come new innovations that make our lives a little easier. Sleep or sound machines are a great tool for falling asleep and staying asleep. This makes a great gift for someone who is a light sleeper or who is experiencing sleep problems.

This sleep machine has 30 distinct sound profiles that are designed to promote deeper sleep. Fall asleep to the sound of rainfall, the ocean, or a crackling fireplace. If your 90-year-old loved one isn’t tech-savvy, take the time to install it and show them how it works.

The Book of Myself: A Do-It-Yourself Autobiography in 201 Questions

The Book of Myself: A Do-It-Yourself Autobiography in 201 Questions

Having lived 90 years, I’m sure your loved one has plenty of stories to tell and a lifetime of memories. The Book of Myself asks all the right questions so that the person can write down their history in an easy and comfortable way. I love this idea!

To make it a more personal experience, you can sit with your loved one and fill the book out with them as they tell you about their lives. You will probably be surprised to find out things you didn’t know. They can share as much or as little as they wish. This makes a great hand-me-down for children and grandchildren to get to know their family members.

Family Photo Book

Family Photo Book

Most of us seniors have heaps of photo albums and picture frames in our homes to keep our memories alive. Family gatherings, events, and vacations all spread out in different areas.

Why not gather those memories in one place? Choose the most memorable photos, scan them with your phone with a photo scanning app, and create a photo book that is easily accessible and will memorialize moments forever.

If you’re comfortable with technology, you can create your own print-ready book. Otherwise, you can send the photos to a service like Shutterfly and have them design the book for you.

Heart Collage Fleece Photo Blanket

Another way that your birthday loved one can keep family near their heart (and their toes warm) is with a customized printed blanket. Choose photos of family members and have them printed on this heart collage fleece blanket. Choose from soft microfiber fleece, plush fleece, or luxe Sherpa. Keep them toes and that heart warm!

Let’s Celebrate

We all wish to make it to 90 years (and beyond) and hope that our friends and family will celebrate us in a meaningful way when our day comes around.

Even if you’re celebrating a different occasion – maybe a wedding anniversary, or a different number of candles on the cake – it’s great to remember that life is short, and we must find joy in every opportunity!

Do you have a friend or family member that will be celebrating 90 this year? What are you planning to do for them on this special day? If the occasion already passed, what gift did you present to your loved one? How did they react to it? Do you have any ideas for 90th birthday gifts? Please share with the community.
