I learned the hard way that writing your life story is tougher than it sounds. Like many women, I’ve started to write my memoirs several times over the last few decades.
Even though I write thousands of pages of content for Sixty and Me every year, I just couldn’t manage to get my own life down on paper. So, I gave up.
Then, a few months ago, while I was traveling through Europe by train, I had an idea that finally helped me to write my life story. I decided to abandon perfection and simply write my story one beautiful sentence at a time.
The train pulled into Stockholm and I immediately set out to find a notebook and some pretty paper to cover it in. Then, as the train pulled away from the station, I started to write a single sentence on each page.
Here are a few of the sentences that describe the most beautiful things that have happened in my life so far.
“I became a mother to two incredible sons.”
“I worked with Elisabeth Kübler-Ross.”
“I travelled to India.”
“I owned a business called Passion for India.”
“I lived in London.”
“I travelled to many cities on 7 hills.”
“I made a lot of money one year… and spent it all.”
“My fashion style can be described as ‘cultured bohemian.’”
I just wanted to share this experience with you because it made a difference in my life. Instead of trying to write a book for someone else to read, I decided to take a trip down memory lane, one beautiful sentence at a time.
If you want to do something similar, all you need is a little book and a pen. You can decorate your book if you want, but, this is completely optional. Just write your life story in single sentences. I promise it will be a lot of fun!
If you were to describe “the most beautiful things in your life” in a few sentences, what would you write? Please add a few of your most beautiful moments in the comments section below. I’d love to find out a bit more about you.
