Ok, I may be slightly biased, but, in my opinion, women over 60 are amazing! Having lived through six decades of incredible change and complexity, we really are able to deal with almost any eventuality.
We come up with simple repair improvisations on a regular basis. We can make a nourishing meal out of 3 ingredients and solve problems with creative ingenuity. More importantly, we can take the hand of someone in pain and honestly say “I know how you feel.” We have wisdom and the strength of life experience, which, unfortunately, is not always translated into confidence.
In fact, it is because we have experienced the fragility of life that we understand how tenuous and precious it can be. Sometimes our gentle souls, holding a lifetime of experience, make us fearful and even timid. But, this doesn’t have to be the case!
What are we afraid of? We fear the unknown and how to deal with not being always in control. We fear that our social value will decrease as our roles shift. We fear death and do everything we can to protect everyone from its reality but ourselves. We are afraid to ask for help. Being fearless after 60 takes conscious effort.
I actually have a hand painted poster in my room that says “Be fearless.” Every time I feel anxious or overwhelmed, I look at the poster and remember all the times in my life when I have been forced to deal with my fears. I have come through every single challenge. Sure, I have a few battle scars, but, I choose to wear these proudly.
