Suzanne Somers, 71, Opens-Up About Incredible Post-Cancer Procedure

By Sixty and Me October 14, 2018 News

While she is often best known for her portrayal of Chrissy Snow on the hit ‘70s sitcom, Three’s Company, Suzanne Somers, 71, has built a successful career on far more than just her acting skills. Over the years, Somers has penned numerous best-selling books and made a name for herself as a widely revered author.

In addition to becoming a best-selling author, Somers has also found success as a singer, businesswoman, and health spokesperson, especially following her stage II breast cancer diagnosis in 2000.

In the months and years following her diagnosis, Somers was quite vocal about her decision to treat her cancer with more alternative methods that included surgery, radiation, and homeopathic drugs rather than chemotherapy.

And while Somers has received some amount of backlash over the years for her support of alternative medicine, she has remained steadfast in her belief that alternative medicine helped her to beat breast cancer not long after she was diagnosed. However, her most recent medical procedure may be the most unique post-cancer treatment that she has undergone yet.

Re-Growing Her Breast

Due to the fact that Somers has always proudly supported alternative medical and health treatments, it should come as no surprise that when Somers began investigating reconstruction options for her breast, traditional methods were not even on her radar.

Rather than using the more conventional method of breast implants for reconstruction, Somers contacted a doctor at the University of Tokyo that was experimenting with regenerating body parts using stem cells. After some deliberation, Somers embarked on a journey that would make her one of the first women in the United States to undergo cell-assisted lipotransfer, which would help Somers to regenerate her breast tissue more naturally.

According to Somers, “[Doctors] took fat from my stomach, spun out the stem cells, discarded the weak ones, took the strong ones, injected them into this breast with, like, a turkey baster, and for a year I felt, like, electrical zippers growing the blood vessels.”

Somers has been thrilled with the results – since 2012, she has enjoyed two breasts that are fully hers, no implants or foreign objects required.

In fact, initially following the procedure, Somers was so ecstatic about the results that she couldn’t help showing off her new stem-cell grown breast, “The first two weeks after I had it done, I was showing everybody. I’d whip it out — ‘cause I was so used to not having it. And then after two weeks, my husband [Alan Hamel] said to me, ‘You gotta stop showing people your breast!'”

Somers is not only grateful for her new, naturally grown breast, but she explains that she is also grateful for her 2000 breast cancer diagnosis because it prompted her to change her lifestyle for the better, saying, “I have a new standard of care. I didn’t want chemical poison, I changed my diet, I eat real food, organic food only — if you can pick it, pluck it, milk it or shoot it. I eat buttercream, sour cream, cream cheese, all organic, no hormones. I sleep eight hours a night and I don’t take any drugs. I am in optimal life. I don’t even worry about cancer. It’s never coming back.”

While Somers approach to medical procedures and health treatments may not be right for everyone, it certainly acts as a reminder that we are so lucky to be living during a time when there are a countless variety of options available to us for treating illnesses and maintaining our health!

And congratulations to Ms. Somers on her new breast and on staying cancer-free!!
