Spring Makeup for Older Women: Make Your Eyes, Lips and Cheeks Pop This Year

Spring is a symbol of renewal. Celebrity artist Ariane Poole has some very cool refreshing makeup ideas to help you find your new spring self. Enjoy the show!

Our guest today is a very good friend of Sixty and Me, Ariane Poole. Ariane is a makeup artist extraordinaire, and she’s often here answering your questions about makeup and beauty. Welcome, Ariane.

Ariane Poole:

It is so nice to be back with you again Margaret. I’m really thrilled.

Margaret:

You make me smile every time I speak to you, because you have such a positive attitude toward life and ageing, makeup and beauty.

Ariane:

I do feel very positive about it, because what other way is there? I think that dwelling on the negative things brings you down. There are so many things out there that are fantastic.

Margaret:

I agree. It’s spring in our hemisphere so people are now reinventing their look a little bit. I’ve been wandering around the shops and looking at makeup. What’s your take on what is going on this spring with eyes, lips, cheeks, foundations? What’s new?

Ariane:

You want to keep your foundation how you normally keep it, though you should probably move to less hydrating one. I love the video that you did on spring makeup. You really captured the look, and I want to re-emphasize that, as well as introduce a couple of new colors that the ladies can consider.

Margaret:

The video that you’re talking about is the one with the Key Code products where I use funky green and blue colors, right?

Ariane:

Yes, it’s really good. To me, Spring makeup is always like a bouquet of flowers; it’s a bloom of color. That doesn’t mean that you look like Coco the clown, but you do have splashes of color here and there. Some of them are more intense, some of them are subtler. You’ve got to take your personality and skin tone into consideration.

Let’s talk eyes first. You did the beautiful greens and blues, Margaret. I want to show you lilac and purple colors. I think those are equally gorgeous as well. We have a really beautiful purple color in our brand that is coming out in the next few weeks. It’s really gorgeous.

Margaret:

Is it creamy?

Ariane:

Yes, it’s cream-to-powder, and it stays on. It’s really gorgeous. I’ve also got a fabulous Estée Lauder powder pencil in lilac color. It’s great with blue, green and brown eyes. Lilac is almost the new neutral, so it’s a really easy go-to color.

The two colors that I have shown you have very little red in them. They are not going to make your eyes look sore. It often happens that you get a purple color and you say, “It looks like I’ve got really sore eyes; like I’ve been rubbing my eyes.” These won’t have that effect.

Estée Lauder have the same kind of pencil in a deep plum color, which I also like. Of Bobby Brown’s offerings I propose a very pale blue color as a stick.

Margaret:

It’s almost a turquoise color. It’s gorgeous.

Ariane:

It is sensational. It brightens your eyes and doesn’t look over the top. If you don’t want to go too blue, team that bright color with a charcoal or grey pencil; even a chocolate brown looks really nice as well. You can also team it with a navy blue if you want.

If you’re going to go for a strong color on your eyes, keep the cheeks a little bit softer. The mouth can have a strong color as well. On the cheeks, I love this cream and powder lush thing that comes in a stick.

Margaret:

It’s a great color. Can you also use it as a lipstick?

Ariane:

Yes, you can use it on the lips, and it looks strong on the lips. But when you blend it on the cheeks it goes really soft. The initial blob you apply looks kind of scary, but when you blend it in, it goes to a wonderful pink.

Margaret:

Is that one of your products, Ariane?

Ariane:

This is one of my new ones; it’s called Luscious. You just smile and pop that on the apples of your cheeks. Then blend it in, and it adds that little, tiny flush of color. It’s really lovely and lifting. It brightens the face and is a really nice way to go.

Margaret:

Before we move onto lips, I’ve got a question about creams. Creams are great, and I love applying them; I love the way you can layer them. But what about in the summer? Should you be setting that with a powder or something or are yours okay?

Ariane:

On some skins you don’t need to do, and on other skins you do. When I’m doing somebody for a wedding—for instance, the mother of the bride who is normally in our age group—I will apply a cream first, and then I will set it with a coordinating powder.

You put a little coordinating powder over the top for two reasons. One, it sets the color and two, it makes it a lot more long-lasting.

If someone is going to a wedding, usually from ten or eleven in the morning running through till past midnight, they want to keep that fresh look on their cheeks, so that would look gorgeous.

Margaret:

I wanted to mention that when I applied my makeup today, I actually did something very similar. I used your cream Taupe which mattifies a bit. I put that on first, and then after that I put on the Urban Decay Toasted powder.

Ariane:

That kind of combining is so great. A lot of ladies maybe have some powder eye shadow that they’ve bought a while ago, and maybe they’re not giving them the kind of pay off that they want.

Putting a crystal taupe or if you are going to go for the lilac color with some powder eye shadow on top is such a great idea, and it is really easy. You don’t need to be a makeup artist to do it.

Margaret:

So you say that purples and blues are the colors this spring?

Ariane:

Purples, blues and greens are really lovely colors. There are so many options to choose from. If there is somebody that is more into green, Estée Lauder carry the same kind of pencil in sea foam green. It’s got a little bit more vibrancy to it, and it’s easy to wear.

Margaret:

What about lips?

Ariane:

I have absolutely fallen in love with the Chubby Sticks by Clinique. I adore them, they are great colors. I’ve got a cherry red, which is sheer and light weight. They are not as scary when you apply them on the lips as they look when you see them in the tube.

Margaret:

They look really pretty.

Ariane:

The colors are gorgeous, and they do corral colors as well. They complement that springtime bloom of color we talked about earlier. The texture is just right for spring. They have got that light weight feeling with the really rich pigment so even when the shine goes away, you are left with a little bit of stain which I absolutely adore.

The other thing I wanted to quickly share about the eyes is colored mascaras. If you are really timid and you’re thinking, “Oh, I am not sure,” what you can do is put your black mascara on first and then apply your navy or purple on over the top of that. You’ll get that little hint of the purple or the blue coming through, and it is a nice way to dip your toe in.

Margaret:

That’s a really nice idea.

Ariane:

That really covers all the spring looks. I think they are just so pretty and so fresh.

Margaret:

I think it’s the time of year where just to take a little chance and renew yourself. Have fun with it and grow into that new person that you want to be and let the color shine. I’m really glad that we covered all of that. I want to look at those Clinique lip colors; I don’t think I’ve seen them. They look beautiful.

Ariane:

I love them, I think they are really, really good.

Margaret:
