Should You Use a Younger Picture on Your Over 50 Dating Profile?

By Margaret Manning December 22, 2015 Dating

Exploring an over 50 dating site is an emotional experience for most women. Not only are many of us nervous about being back in the dating scene after decades of stability, but, we also have to put ourselves out there for the world to see.

In such a situation, it’s tempting to get a bit “creative” when it comes to our profile pictures. After all, if everyone else is doing it, why shouldn’t we? Is there any harm in posting a picture that is 10 or 15 years old? Isn’t the whole point to get noticed?

Well, I’m not a dating expert, but, I know several people who are. Over the last few years, I’ve interviewed several senior dating coaches, including Lisa Copeland and David Wygant.

I’ve also talked with hundreds of women in the Sixty and Me community who have found love after 50. Their advice is simple – don’t lie on your over 50 dating profile. Present yourself in a positive light, but, be honest from the start.

What’s the harm with stretching the truth a bit when it comes to your profile picture? For starters, you set false expectations that will be impossible for you to meet when you actually go on a date. Even worse, you send a signal to anyone that you meet that honesty is not an important value to you.

Now, at this point, you may be thinking, “Ok Margaret, that sounds all fine and dandy… but, we live in the real world. Everyone else is fudging the truth. How can I attract a good partner if I don’t join them?”

The good news is that you don’t have to be dishonest to create an amazing profile picture. In fact, if you follow these simple rules, you will present yourself in a flattering and honest light.

How to Take an Amazing Over 50 Dating Profile Picture

Smile! A recent study showed that men find profile pictures of women smiling more attractive than pictures of other facial expressions.

Be passionate

There is an old saying that “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Don’t just tell people what you love to do. Show them! If you love to hike, take a picture of you out in nature. If you love to paint, why not include your studio in the shot?

Be social

While you may not want to have other people in your main profile shot, having other pictures of you with your friends is a great idea. This shows that you are social and fun to hang out with.

Focus on quality

If you are going to take the time to fill out your over 50 dating profile, it makes sense to at least use a good quality camera to take your picture. Use some light makeup and face a natural light source to make your picture shine.

If you are looking for some makeup tips to look great in photos, here is a video that I recorded with the amazing Ariane Poole.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this! Do you agree with the profile picture suggestions in this article? Why or why not? Have you tried over 50 dating? What was your experience? Please join the conversation.
