More than almost any other phase in our lives, our 60s are a time of transitions. At Sixty and Me, we like to focus on the emotional aspects of life after 60 – reinvention, making friends as an adult and overcoming your fears.
However, the fact of the matter is that there are also important practical considerations that we face in our 60s. One of the most important of these is saving for retirement. It’s not a “fun” topic. It’s not “sexy,” like makeup or fashion. But, the decisions that you make about your money will change the course of your life.
As I have written about previously, the concept of retirement is changing – so much so that many of us are now assuming that we will work for as long as we can. Even those of us who want to “retire,” in a traditional sense, are not planning on sitting still. Instead, we are looking forward to following our passions, going back to school, traveling (if we have the means) or starting an encore career.
Since the women in our community span multiple decades, we have an opportunity to share our wisdom with each other. Saving for retirement is a great example of this.
If you have recently retired, I would love to ask for your opinion on saving for retirement. I would be especially interested in any specific tips of tricks that you found useful. For example, many women in the community have told me that switching to using only cash to make purchases made a big difference for them.
So, here are the specific questions that I would like to ask. Please take a look and answer any of the ones that you have insights into in the comments section at the end of this article. If you are approaching retirement age, please feel free to jump in to the conversation and ask your own questions in the comments section. The more we help each other, the stronger our community will become!
