Part of my inspiration for starting Sixty and Me was the feeling that too many media outlets do not devote enough attention to women over 60. I feel that we are too often invisible on magazine covers and on TV shows, and our voices are not being heard.
Here is my top list of magazines for women over 60:
I wanted to create my own community of wonderful women over 60 to share our stories, learn from each other, and communicate our wisdom about living more financially independent, personally fulfilling, healthy, and connected lives.
While the mainstream media still has a long way to go, there are fortunately several great magazines that do a wonderful job of sharing stories and connecting women over 60 with worthwhile information and resources.
Real Simple is a beautifully produced, smartly written magazine. It is not exclusively “for” women over 60 but contains lots of great articles that often are of interest to women our age. Real Simple is dedicated to helping people live simpler, peaceful, uncluttered lives.
Every issue has great tips for how to cook healthy, affordable meals at home (minimizing time in the kitchen and maximizing nutrition and flavor), how to find great deals on fashion, cosmetics, and other essentials to help you feel more beautiful and stylish, and how to create a more fulfilling life.
There are many inspiring stories in Real Simple. These are about friendship, building community, nurturing families, and finding strength and motivation to achieve great things in your career and in your life.
Woman’s Day magazine is a jam-packed print and online magazine that offers readers loads of recipes, DIY projects, family activities, inspiring stories, and also style and health advice.
Every holiday known to man is showcased in Woman’s Day with tips and tricks on how to celebrate it.
The O Magazine (print version) was discontinued in late 2020. Oprah has recently introduced a new online platform that she named Oprah Daily. The new magazine is a digital platform with a quarterly print edition. It also has a special membership-only community. The magazine is dedicated to helping people live their best lives by delivering the latest in beauty, wellness, culture, news, and more.
Women’s Health magazine is all about food, nutrition, exercise, beauty, and everything health-related. It is published 10 times a year and the online magazine is updated daily with articles about exercise, recipes, and beauty products.
Reader’s Digest has been around for nearly 100 years and has consistently offered its readers great stories, awesome laughs, and valuable advice. The first issue came out in February 1922!
The recently added online version has plenty of great reads. It’s not specifically geared at older women readers, but it does have a strong female readership.
Martha Stewart is practically a household name by being the queen of entertaining. Her magazine is stocked with ideas and inspirations to entertain, decorate, garden, organize, and everything else related to your home.
The AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) is one of America’s biggest organizations for people who have reached retirement age (whether or not they are technically “retired” yet).
In addition to great discounts on senior travel, the AARP Magazine also offers insightful interviews and articles on how to boost your brainpower, where to find great recipes, and compelling celebrity profiles that might make you seriously consider implementing some changes in your life.
