Margaret Manning:
Today my guest is Ariane Poole, who is a celebrity makeup artist. She’s been working with Sixty and Me for several years, and I’m thrilled that she’s here. Welcome, Ariane.
Ariane Poole:
I’m really excited to be here today.
Margaret:
We’ve done a series of videos today, but this one I’m really looking forward to. People have been wondering about your favorite makeup and beauty products. So I put that challenge to you. I’d like you to share with us your ten must-have beauty products. I haven’t seen them myself, and I’m so curious!
Ariane:
No, you haven’t actually seen them. Some of them you kind of know, but others will most likely surprise you.
Margaret:
I am looking forward to being surprised. We love surprises, here at Sixty and Me. After you’re done, I’m going to show you my ten makeup products that I use every day. This is show and tell time.
Ariane:
These products are actually what I use, so they have come from my cupboard, my makeup drawer and my bathroom. They’re a mixture of skincare and makeup. A little bit of everything.
First on the list is my concealer palette, which, to me, is my absolute must-have. It covers up all my redness and gets rid of all the blemish, uneven skin tones. This is my desert island product. I could use that instead of a foundation, if I wanted to. It’s really my big must-have.
Another one of my must-haves is called collagen shots. I put a scoop of this in my smoothie every single morning. It is absolutely fantastic. I’ve seen such an improvement in my skin and in my skin tone, it’s really great. So that is a must for me.
Margaret:
What brand is it? People will ask and I want to make sure they get the right things. Who makes that?
Ariane:
This is Rejuvenated.
Margaret:
That’s the name of the company?
Ariane:
Yes. I’ve been using this for quite some time, and I panic if run out. I’ve actually got it on a repeat order, so I get it sent to me every month.
Next on the list is another one of my products, The Ultimate Face Tint. I absolutely adore it. It makes my face look like I’ve had a really good facial. It is actually a combination of foundation, primer, BB and CC cream, all rolled into one product.
Then I’ve got another one of mine. It is the Mineral Illuminating Pen. I use it not just to hide dark circles, but also on the undersides of my mouth to get rid of that jowly look. I use it on my frown line as well, when it looks frownier than it should.
Margaret:
Wonderful product.
Ariane:
Now I’m going to show you something that you would probably think that I’m really crazy.
Margaret:
It’s okay, we like wacky.
Ariane:
This is another one of my must-have beauty products – scotch tape. I know you’re thinking, “She’s really lost the plot,” but my dad taught me this, and I have to say it really is good.
If I had a particularly frowny day or if I’m going to be working on the computer a lot, I will put a piece of tape between my brows, and it stops me from frowning. It really works!
Margaret:
I don’t have any scotch near me.
Ariane:
Sometimes I put it on before I go to bed, and it gets rid of that frown line, because you frown in your sleep as well. They’ve got those special tapes you can buy that do the same thing. I think they’re even called frown tapes.
Margaret:
I’ve never seen it before.
Ariane:
This works a treat, too.
Margaret:
Scotch tape, imagine that.
Ariane:
The next product is by Glow Pro. That’s the pin roller thing. You know I’ve talked about needles in the past.
Margaret:
Oh yeah, you told me about that.
Ariane:
The one I have here vibrates and goes red, and it’s got little pins on its surface. It’s fantastic! I absolutely love it. You obviously use it with no makeup on.
Margaret:
No serum or anything in it?
Ariane:
Nope. You use it just like it is. The Glow Pro is a really gorgeous product. I got it from QBC, but there are also other companies. I use another one as well, and it’s by Environ. That one doesn’t have the red light in it. It doesn’t vibrate, either. It’s also great. It just depends on what your price bracket is.
They both have little teeny pins. The pins don’t hurt, and this gadget really works. When you apply it the first time you think, “Ah nothing. Not much has happened.” Day two goes by, “Agh, nothing much happened.” Day three goes by and still nothing, you think, “This is just the biggest waste of time.” On day five you wake up, and you go, “Oh my gosh!”
Margaret:
Totally different, something happened.
Ariane:
Yes. It works by damaging your skin. By making the little needle marks, it stimulates the collagen underneath to kick in and create your own collagen.
Margaret:
That is really interesting, Ariane. I was actually reading about why guys or men sometimes have good line as they get older. The article stated that the reason was because men shave.
Ariane:
Yes. Shaving damages the collagen in their skin.
Margaret:
Exactly.
Ariane:
And we don’t want to shave.
Margaret:
No, totally. Same concept though.
Ariane:
I love the Glow Pro. I’ve been using it, and I’ve really seen the difference. As a matter of fact, I’ve done a before me and an after-a-few-months-of-using-it me. I compared the two, and the difference really is significant.
Margaret:
That is cool.
Ariane:
A friend of mine even said to me, “Your skin looks really good.” I said, “I’ve been using this Glow Pro thing.” I sent her a picture so she knows what to go out and get. I really, really like it a lot. I’m not getting paid to say nice things about the product. I don’t have anything to do with it. It’s just something that I think works.
Margaret:
That’s why we let you share. Thank you.
Arianne:
This next product I’ve got when I was in Australia. It is by Esop. I had a reaction to the water in Australia. It looked like I’ve been kissing a man with a heavy stubble. I had a rash across the lower half of my face. Just to clarify though, I wasn’t kissing anybody, it was just a rash.
Margaret:
Okay, Arianne.
Arianne:
So I went into this place, Esop, to get help. Nothing else I tried, except for this, worked. This was amazing. It’s a facial product you can put on and leave it on overnight if you want to. It smells absolutely divine, so you do want to use it. It just soothed and calmed my really, really irritated skin.
I’ve been using it ever since. There is no need to use it every single night, because it’s a treatment product. I use it once every other night. I like the idea of taking care of my skin so that all the makeup products I put on look the best they possibly can.
Margaret:
That is amazing. What is it actually called? It’s by Esop, but what is the product?
Arianne:
It is called Blue Chamomile Facial Hydrating Mask. I can smell lavender in it as well. It’s calming and soothing, and it was the only thing that stopped my face from getting really rashy and sore.
Margaret:
These are all wonderful products, Ariane. As you’re talking, we’re making a note of all these products, and we’ll put them in the article so people can get them if they want.
Ariane:
I want to show you lots of different great things that I have and recommend. I had a terrible experience the other day in the changing room of a department store. It was those ones with the mirrors that go all around.
Margaret:
Yeah, that’s dangerous.
Ariane:
I saw stuff I didn’t really need to see. It made me really conscious of how the skin on my body is getting saggy. It was not the way I remembered it to look. I don’t see the my back and I don’t often look around my ribcage.
I don’t pay much attention to my body when I’m jumping in and out of the bath, either. In that dressing room though, I sure as was paying attention. I thought, “That’s it. I need to either create my own firming cream, or I have to go out and buy one.” So, I actually went out and bought one. I bought the Palmers Cocoa Butter firming cream.
Margaret:
I’ve seen that product.
Ariane:
It was really good, and I noticed a difference. The bottle was too big for me to take to Australia so in Australia I needed to get something else. I went and bought the Nivea one, and that too had a significant difference. Not the first or the second day, but again, the third and fourth day.
I’m not normally one that goes, “Oh yeah, these body products work.” I actually saw that my skin looked better. It didn’t make me look like I lost a stone or anything like that. It just made my skin look not so crinkly.
Margaret:
Is there caffeine in either of those products?
Ariane:
I don’t know actually.
Ariane:
The one has coenzyme 10, avocado oil, cotton seed oil and macadamia nut oil, which is delicious. The other one I can’t read the ingredients.
Margaret:
Some of those products have caffeine in them because coffee has a natural tightening effect. Maybe if you can’t afford to buy these products you can make something with coffee and coconut oil.
Ariane:
Absolutely. Coconut oil and coffee. I might try that actually. That even sounds and smells good. My mind has gone off on a tangent here!
The other product that’s among my must-haves is this mirror by Tweezer Man. It has a humongous magnification. It is a scary magnification when you’re looking at things.
Margaret:
Little hairs that appear out of nowhere.
Ariane:
Hairs that you have to pull out and things like that. I don’t use this mirror as my makeup guide. I use it to check my eyebrows. It is really good because when I take off my glasses, even the magnified side of the mirror is not good enough for me.
Margaret:
What brand is that again?
Ariane:
That’s Tweezer Man and it’s an international brand. It has the stickers for the window.
Margaret:
I have one on the window that I use. Do you have any insights on how this works? You go to sleep at night and there’s no hair there. When you wake up in the morning, it’s this big. It’s huge!
Ariane:
I think they’re coiled, and then they spring out like that. I had that exact same thing happen to me. I went to bed, and I actually checked myself in the mirror to make sure all my makeup was off. It all looked fine. When I woke up, there was this long black hair. That was really strange.
My final product is one I just discovered by a company which is called Mina. They’ve got shops all over the world, and it’s very reasonably priced. This is called My Cellular Gel, rather than My Cellular Water. I found that My Cellular Water was a little bit drying on my skin. So I tried the gel and it was soothing, comforting and really nice to use. I loved that.
And that was my number 10.
Margaret:
Wow. Actually I’m really glad that we did this.
Ariane:
Eclectic.
Margaret:
I would say that is putting it gently. The cologen one I’m very interested in. I’d also like to try the body firming ones. I avoid places with those three way mirrors, I think they are just scary.
Ariane:
They’re a shock to the system because you don’t often get to see yourself like that. I just really wanted to do something about it. I’ve got my clothes on most of the time, but it’s for my own peace of mind.
Margaret:
Thank you for sharing your ten or eleven secret beauty products. I think that people should not feel obliged to go out and buy all this stuff. This is just Ariane sharing. I promised I would show you the ten makeup products that I use as well.
This was super hard. On my cupboard I’ve got little boxes separated into eye section and lip section and so on. I do love to play with makeup, but I had to choose so I chose ten items. Like you, I actually have eleven.
Number one is a primer, which I put on my face before I put any makeup on. This is a Catrice primer, and it’s super inexpensive. I’ve tried the expensive ones and I find this is just as good. It’s just a creamy primer.
Ariane:
Do you put that on over the top of your moisturizer?
Margaret:
No. I use it instead of a moisturizer. Then what I use is your foundation.
Ariane:
Oh, we both chose that product!
Margaret:
I chose this because it is like a moisturizer. The primer I leave on for five minutes, and then I put on the foundation. The result is a really lovely look. I’ve got it on today, it has a nice glow. If I want to put a little extra on, when I’m on camera for example, I just wait for it to dry a little bit, and then I apply a second layer.
Number three you may not know about, but I had to include it. It’s an eye base by Tart. The reason I chose this as my number three is because I have very dark color on my eye lids. When I put on any eyeshadow on my lids I end up with this dark smudge.
When I was with you and you did my makeup, we used your liquid to matte eye shadow, which is my number four. So I put on the eye base all over my eye lid, and it flattens it.
Ariane:
Yeah, it neutralizes it.
Margaret:
Exactly. Then I use your beautiful liquid to matte eyeshadow, which I have on today. It’s just a beautiful color. My number five is a tiny little brush from Essence, which is another drugstore product. It’s a nice blond color, and it has a teeny weeny brush.
Ariane:
Pen size wand as well.
Margaret:
It’s really convenient, and it doesn’t feel like you’re stabbing yourself. That’s what I use for my eyebrows, which I learned how to do from you.
The next thing is my eyeliner. I do actually have this beautiful grey eyeliner. It’s a Kiko product, which I really like. The reason I like it is because it’s really smooth, and it’s got a smudger on the end.
My mascara comes next. It’s by NYX, and it’s called Provocateur. It’s got two parts to it: the first part is quite volumizing and the second piece, which you pull out from the top, has a very small little brush. It’s like a definer, and when you apply it, it kind of pulls the lashes up. The large brush covers your lashes, then the small one pulls them up and separates them.
Ariane:
It’s very cool. I like that.
Margaret:
And I’ve never seen that before.
Ariane:
I’ve never seen that either. It’s really interesting.
Margaret:
Then I’ve got my blush. It’s Noris, and it’s Orgasm.
Ariane:
That’s really nice.
Margaret:
It’s a creamy blush, which I really like. I put it right where Ariane taught me to.
Ariane:
Yeah, fantastic.
Margaret:
Next I have my lip line, which is again a Kiko product. It’s rosewood kind of brownie color.
Ariane:
So it’s a natural lip color.
Margaret:
Yes, it’s a natural lip color. When you put it on though, it’s really strong. You can actually see it. I don’t like the nude ones that disappear after you put them on. This one is visible.
Ariane:
You want definition, that’s why.
Margaret:
Exactly. You taught me how to pull a little bit over your lip, and it just gives you definition. It’s also got a brush on the end. I really like to have a brush for my lipstick.
My lipstick is a brand new one I just bought. It’s an Armani.
Ariane:
I was just gonna say, is it a classic Armani. That’s such a great shade on you.
Margaret:
I love this color. I was scraping up the last one just to wear today. This is the Giorgio Armani number 507. Those were my ten items.
Ariane:
Oh, fantastic.
Margaret:
So I love experimenting with different things. For example, I wished I could put a blue eyeliner in my ten.
Ariane:
If I would be showing you only makeup, it would be all of my own brand. I wanted to show you other things as well.
There are lots of other areas where I find other products really useful. The whole thing goes together to make ourselves feel and look good and positive about ourselves.
Margaret:
Totally. You and I love to talk about positive aging, and that’s what this is all about. It’s about good nutrition; it’s about getting exercise; it’s about getting good skin products, that collagen drink, which is really interesting to me. Using technology that we have that’s not been around before.
Ariane:
All of those things help with positive aging. We lose the collagen in our skin, that’s why I like to use the pin thing—it’s stimulating it. Then I’m drinking it as well. If it wasn’t effective, I wouldn’t keep repeat buying it.
None of these products I showed is a gift. These are things I actually go out and purchase. It’s not being gifted to me. I have a standing order for the collagen drink.
Margaret:
They’re like, “Well there’s another order for Ariane that’s come in.”
Ariane:
Every month it gets sent to me, and the amount gets taken off my debit card. I simply can’t be without that. I tried an experiment where I stopped taking it for about two months, and my skin started to look not so great.
Margaret:
That’s fascinating. I hope everyone has enjoyed this. It’s actually kind of a fun experiment.
Ariane:
You should ask what other people in the community consider their must-have products. We could all be without everything, but what would you not want to be without?
Margaret:
I think that’s a great question. Let’s put a challenge out there. You could make it ten if you want, but name your top five products that you really don’t want to be without, that are always close by and you panic if you run out of.
Ariane:
Yeah.
Margaret:
Great idea. Okay, Ariane, that was really helpful. I’m gonna go online and see if I can find some of the things you mentioned. Thank you so much. That was wonderful.
Ariane:
Bye-bye.
Margaret:
Bye.
