The last time Judi Dench played Queen Victoria, it was in Mrs. Brown, a film about Queen Victoria and her relationship with her butler, John Brown. For her performance, Dench was nominated for an Oscar as Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Now, she is scheduled to return to the screen as Queen Victoria in “Victoria & Abdul” (coming in 2017), a film based on Shrabani Basu’s book of the same title.
It’s easy to see connections between the two films. For example, Victoria & Abdul takes place during a time when Queen Victoria needed a replacement for John Brown. That said, these are clearly very different films.
As the British film council said, this is “A tender love story between an ordinary Indian and his elderly queen, a relationship that survived the best attempts to destroy it.”
Personally, I can’t wait to see this film for several reasons. First, and most obviously, Judi Dench is a fantastic actress. I can’t remember the last time when one of her films disappointed me. Second, in a funny way, the theme of generations working together is relevant to many things that are going on in the world right now.
In reality, the divisions that we perceive between the generations are exaggerated. At the end of the day, we have so much to gain by listening to people both younger and older than us.
The producers of Victoria & Abdul have not released a trailer yet. But, we will be sure to share it with you as soon as it is available. In the meantime, please let us know if you are excited to see this film in the comments section below.
