Keeping Your Brain Healthy – Indre Viskontas (Video)

In this episode of the Sixty and Me Show, I had the unique opportunity to speak with Dr. Indre Viskontas, a neuroscientist (and opera singer) who shares her insights on how to keep the brain healthy after 60 in four different ways – nutrition, stress management, mental stimulation and exercise. Her observations are both inspirational and practical.

Dr. Viskontas is a wonderful fusion of art and science with a PHD in Neuroscience and a Masters in Music. As a doctor, she studies memory, how our brains change as a function of aging and how to keep the brain healthy and active. We speak about the type of foods and exercise that support brain health and the importance of establishing consistent mentally challenging routines in our lives. Enjoy the show!

We also discuss the importance of practicing relaxation techniques and understanding how stress negatively impacts our brain. She explains the best types of activities for mental stimulation including the value of learning a new language and playing games.

As we get older, we worry about losing our memory, creativity and brain strength and Dr. Viskontas reassures us that this does not have to be the case. Keeping active and living a stimulating and challenging life is the key to maintaining a strong and agile brain and Dr. Viskontas validates this with research and data.

She offers an energized and motivational look at keeping our brains healthy after 60 and the importance of communities like Sixty and Me for establishing the power of connection and social interaction. I hope that you enjoy the interview.
