How to Have a Happy Marriage, According to Helen Mirren

By Margaret Manning February 27, 2017 Family

As we reach our 60s, many women feel a certain amount of tension between our need for intimacy and our desire for independence. This is true whether we are single or in a relationship.

On the one hand, women over 60 are still sensuous and emotional creatures. We crave human contact in all of its forms. On the other hand, after 6 decades on this planet, we know who we are and we are often less willing to compromise.

In a previous article, I discussed the importance of finding the right balance between intimacy and independence after 60. I argued that women may even need to give up a bit of their independence in order to find love. Well, according to Helen Mirren, the opposite may also be true.

How to Have a Happy Marriage After 60

In an interview with People Magazine, Helen Mirren weighed in on this topic, as she shared her secrets for having a happy marriage at any age. She said:

The thing is to allow the other person freedom to do what they want to do, which is so important… Let them do it. Encourage them and support them and vice versa.

I think many women in our community would agree with Mirren on this point. It’s true that sometimes we need to give up a little independence to find intimacy. However, the opposite is also true. Sometimes, we need to give our partner space in order to stay close to them.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

What do you think are the secrets to having a happy marriage after 60? What have you found that you need more of as you have gotten a little older – intimacy or independence? Why? Please join the conversation.
