Helen Mirren Offers 3 Tips for Getting in Shape After 60

By Margaret Manning February 02, 2016 Health and Fitness

By the time we reach our age, we know that we need to get in better shape. We don’t lack knowledge. We lack motivation, discipline and energy. The good news is that getting in shape after 60 doesn’t have to be difficult. As Helen Mirren recently suggested, there are several simple steps that you can take to get in great shape at any age.

Take it Slowly

In an interview in People, Mirren joked, “My thing with exercise is start really easy, just so you only do three sit-ups, you know?” This is similar to the advice that we have given previously on Sixty and Me. In the beginning, the best kind of exercise program is one that keeps you coming back.

When you start a new exercise program – especially after a long break – it’s easy to overdo it. The expression, “No pain, no gain” may be true for professional athletes, but, not for beginners.

So, follow Mirren’s advice and take it easy. There will be plenty of time to push yourself when your workout habits become firmly established.

Do Something You Enjoy

In a separate interview with the Daily Mail, Helen Mirren admitted that she is not a big fan of the gym. Instead, she uses the Royal Canadian Air Force 12-minute exercise plan. Like Mirren, many older adults say that the key to fitness after 60 is finding something that you love to do.

Some people love to go to the gym. Other people thrive when they try competitive sports, like football or fencing. Still others, like me, prefer dance-based exercise programs, like Zumba or Jazzercise.

There are no “right” or “wrong” answers when it comes to picking an exercise plan. Find an activity that you love and the rest will take care of itself.

Wear a Great Outfit

What was Helen Mirren’s final piece of workout advice? In her interview with People, Mirren said, “Buy yourself a fabulous workout outfit.” On the surface, this might seem like a frivolous comment, but, when you think about it, it makes a lot of sense.

Going to the gym requires a lot of effort. The better you feel about yourself, the more likely you will be to take the first step. Your new workout outfit won’t make you lift more or run faster. But, it may just give you the added confidence that you need to keep moving forward.

What do you think of Helen Mirren’s advice for getting in shape after 60? What advice would you give to a friend who wants to get in better shape? Please join the conversation.
