Raquel Welch was born on September 5, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois. She worked as a model, waitress and TV weather girl, before getting into films. Today, Raquel turns 78 and I’d love us all to wish her a very happy birthday! Let’s take a look at some of the highlights from her career and why she means so much to many women over 60.
Welch is best known for playing seductive roles that focused on her physical beauty. However, there is a side to Raquel that endears her to all women over 60, regardless of what we look like. Blessed with undeniable physical gifts, Raquel could have become one-dimensional. Instead, she championed issues that she believed in and became a force for good in the world.
Raquel is passionate about health and fitness and wrote several books on these topics. She also shattered stereotypes beautiful women by becoming an entrepreneur. She wasn’t afraid to talk about her beauty, but, she never thought that it was her most valuable asset. The title of her biography was a cry to be taken seriously as a complex woman. The title was, “Raquel – Beyond the Cleavage.”
She wrote her biography herself, at one point saying, “I felt like people had me on a pedestal, and they didn’t know there was this other person. They saw the poster but they didn’t really know the story behind it.”
Several years ago, Raquel began working with the American Cancer Society, creating a line of wigs for women dealing with hair loss due to chemotherapy. She showed her kind and compassionate heart when she said, “When women go to the mirror and see their hair falling out, it’s like they see the cancer winning.” She continued, “If they don’t have to see themselves that way – it helps with their morale.”
Raquel Welch is a multi-faceted woman who has earned the right not to be defined by her physical beauty.
