Barbra Streisand has been a constant presence in my life. A singing, acting and cultural icon, she has won 10 Grammy awards and sold over 245-million records.

She is original, unique and incredibly talented. Her voice leaves grooves in your soul and audiences have been mesmerized by her incredible talent for over 60 years. Can you believe that! Over 60 years!

Barbra recognized the depth of her own character when she celebrated her personality in this quote. She said, “I am simple, complex, generous, selfish, unattractive, beautiful, lazy, and driven.” And we love her for all those qualities.

Celebrating Barbra’s Complexity and Beautiful Strength

For me, Barbra’s talent and complexity of character makes her such an interesting woman.

Over the course of her career, she has been called a perfectionist. But, it is her intensity that has given her singing and acting performances a transformational power.

You can tell that, for Barbra, entertaining was a process of self-examination. Her passion for life gave her the ability to celebrate the complexity of her own life and that of women in general.

A Star of Music and Film

Barbra also had success as an actress, receiving an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the 1968 musical film Funny Girl.

Her song “Evergreen,” written for the film A Star Is Born earned an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in 1977.

Perhaps, for me and many women in their sixties, the most memorable performance was in the movie, The Way We Were, with Robert Redford. It is about two passionate people who have a wonderful romance but are torn apart by their different political views and convictions.

Today, at 76 years old, Barbara celebrates her birthday with her husband James Brolin, who she has been with for 30 years!

In her biography, “Redefining Beauty, Femininity, and Power,” she is described as a “monumentally gifted popular artist and cultural icon who challenged Hollywood’s standards of beauty and glamour.” We couldn’t agree more!

Yes, Barbra Streisand is a unique woman, full of character and charisma. As I sing her beautiful song “People” from the movie Funny Girl, to my little grandson, I am enchanted by her voice in my mind and the depth of the message. I cherish the many gifts she has given to the world and the lives she has touched.
