Janice retired to Ecuador a few years ago along with her two twin brothers. A happy bunch that I had the good fortune to meet and become friends with. Janice reminds me of a gleeful faery spreading joy-dust wherever she goes which, thankfully, included my film studio.
All her life, Janice has lived by the motto “if it’s not fun, don’t do it.” Couple that mindset with a smokey eye, silver glitter shadow, lip gloss, and fluffed-up curly hair, and you have our video tutorial for today! With that in mind, these five steps to glamour are so easy to implement as well as to shave off a few years (always an encouraging thought). Let’s get glamorous!
You don’t need 10 skincare products to have beautiful skin, you really only need three. The active ingredients that have the greatest effect on your skin are oil soluble vitamin C (not water soluble like l-ascorbic acid), retinol or vitamin A, and hyaluronic acid.
In a nutshell, vitamin C is a nourishing antioxidant, brightener, and hydrator, while retinol causes cell turnover which leads to reducing lines and wrinkles and ultimately greater skin health. Lastly, Hyaluronic Acid is a natural plumping agent that adds a youthful glow if used consistently.
For Janice, I used vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and fulvic acid as a transducer of the other ingredients. In the video, you can see the instant impact of these products on her skin.
One of the biggest aging mechanisms is discoloration around the eye area. Having said that, if you use a concealer with a heavy consistency, it will set in fine lines and age you (never a good thing)!
In the video, I used a peachy MAC concealer that does a wonderful job of neutralizing Janice’s discoloration around her eyes, and I also used it to cover redness around her nose and over her eyelid. This does an excellent job of brightening up the entire area and magically making her look more awake and youthful. As an aside, concealer sits better on nourished and hydrated skin which is why I was careful to add vitamin C to her eye area.
Using black liquid liner around your eyes if you are over 60 means you teeter between looking like an overdone street-walker or a magnificently glamorous movie star without much wiggle room in between the two (always tricky). Unless the street-walker look is what you’re going for, learning a few diffusion tricks is needed.
In Janice’s case, I applied a charcoal eyeshadow with a thin brush along her eyeline first, and then the liquid (or gel in this case) liner on top of it. This softens the edges of the liner and gives a smokey look to the area. You can also do the liner and then the shadow which works as well with less color density.
With a heavy liner on the top lashes, it helps to use highlighter under the eyes and on the brow bones to show contrast. Be careful to use highlight that is about one to two shades lighter than your skin, but no more than that. Too large of a contrast to your skin tone and you look, well, weird. I’m not a fan of weird (always a good mentality if you’re a makeup artist), so be sure you are using the right shade.
Another wonderful trick to brighten the eye area is to add either false lashes, or individual lashes placed at the outer edge of each eye. On Janice, I popped 3 individual lashes on each eye, which gave them a lovely lift and opened them up even more.
Janice’s inner faery loved the wide array of color options on the eyeshadow palette! I ended up picking a vibrant turquoise and adding it under her lower lash line for a splash of color that is so pretty. Be sure to blend it and work with it so it doesn’t take over your face. In this case, it really added a playfulness that worked with Janice’s personality.
Glamorous makeup doesn’t need to be heavy, overdone, or date you. It can be youthful, beautiful, and bring out your brightest and most youthful look! And, if you are a faery sprinkling glitter everywhere, try adding a pop of color and some silver glitter to help you on your way. Will you give it a try?
Have you tried a glamorous transformation? Was it for a specific occasion or just for fun? What products make a woman look the most glamorous?
