If you believe what you see on TV and in the movies, fashion for older women is all about dull colors, covering up and “dressing your age.” What nonsense! It’s absolutely true that some shapes go better with certain body types, but, for the most part, fashion after 60 is all about choosing clothes that express your personality and make you feel great.
There also seems to be a huge gap in the market for clothes that address the needs of women in their 50s and 60s. While older models are starting to gain traction, for the most part, older consumers are ignored by the major fashion labels, who prefer to focus on teens and 20-somethings, who fit their desired image.
Fortunately, older women are taking matters into to their own hands and there are already several self-made style icons out there. These women are refusing to be invisible and are using social media to share their fashion ideas with the world.
In the coming months, I am going to share some of my favorite fashion for older women icons and inspiring fashionistas with the Sixty and Me community. To kick things off, here are a few of my favorite icons of style that rock Instagram.
I hope they inspire you to develop a personal style that makes you look and feel great. It’s time to remind the world that we are passionate, active and visible members of society.

Life after 60 should be all about expressing yourself and following your passions. This is also true when it comes to fashion for older women. There is nothing wrong with paying attention to the “rules” of fashion when they make you look better – to yourself. But, for the most part, fashion for older women is all about finding a style that makes you feel more like the person you are inside.
What do you think of the women featured in this article? Are there any particular styles that resonated with you? What other older fashion icons should we feature on Sixty and Me? Please join the conversation.
