As we get a little older, we start to realize that we have fewer years ahead of us than behind. In many ways, this new perspective helps us see life in a different, more meaningful, way.
It’s true that most boomers have never been afraid of a challenge and, while some women choose to retreat into a more solitary lifestyle as they get older, the majority are getting bolder with age. These women face their inevitable death, each day, and choose to live with vitality, enthusiasm and excitement. I think many of the women in the Sixty and Me community fall into this second category.
Uncertainty about the future can be met with surrender. Or, it can be seen as a challenge. I suggest we go with the bold and fearless appraoch.
I am reminded by a quote by Emily Dickinson who said, Not knowing when the dawn will come, I open every door.
Because we don’t know what life holds, she suggests that we forget our fears and hesitation. She encourages us to investigate and explore new things, even if, or perhaps especially if we do not know what is hiding around the next corner.
So, now that you are in your 60s or better, why not act boldly? Why not explore a passion, mentor someone, volunteer, start a new career and explore the world?
Follow your passions. Open every door. You can never see what is on the other side – but its worth taking a risk to find out! You may be afaid. That’s ok. The place behind the door may not reveal what you expected. It could even lead to disappointment. But one thing is for sure – taking a chance is an act of defiance, curiosity and passion.
Many women in the Sixty and Me community have told me that knowledge of our mortality is something that motivates them to put more energy into their lives. By accepting the fact that they are only here for a limited time, they find the strength to embrace every opportuntiy.
If you are feeling hesitant, here are some ways to overcome your fears. We don’t know when our day will come. But, we can stand up and give 100% to life. We can choose to never stop exploring. We can embrace what is behind every door.
