Embracing Rebirth, Redirection, and Meaning This Spring Season

By Diane Bruno March 01, 2024 Mindset

Alright, I’ll admit it (or in this case, write it) – I have a deep affection for winter. There’s something about the crisp air, the blanket of snow, and the cozy evenings spent nestled on the couch with a warm, soft blanket that fills me with contentment and joy. However, as spring approaches, I find myself endeavoring to welcome it with a fresh perspective and insight that I’m eager to share with all of you.

As winter gives way to the gentle embrace of spring, the world awakens to a season of renewal – a time for rebirth, redirection, and the pursuit of meaning. This year and as a woman of faith, I am focusing on a deeper significance of spring’s arrival and the opportunities it presents for spiritual growth and renewal.

A Period of Reflection and Repentance

This year, Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday fell on the same day. For those who are not familiar with the significance of Ash Wednesday, it marks the commencement of Lent – a period of reflection and repentance in preparation for Easter Sunday. As the priest adorns our forehead with ashes, he recites, and we are reminded that from the dust we were made and to the dust we shall return (Genesis 3:19). We remember that we have all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory, and yes, we all will die (Romans 3:23).

Attending a noon-time mass this year, I was struck by the overwhelming turnout. In my parish, it was standing room only, with the church brimming with congregants of ALL ages seeking solace and spiritual guidance. Conversations with friends across the country echoed similar observations, and we pondered what made this year a standout in attendance. We collectively concluded that a resurgence and yearning for deeper meaning, connection, and normalcy must be the root cause.

There is no doubting or avoiding the fact that we are living in a time of unrest, anger, division, and in many ways a breakdown in the moral fiber that once permeated our society no matter one’s age, religious or political affiliation. There was a focus on what united us rather than what divided us.

We embraced life differently and focused more on the blessing of life rather than only on the despair of the human condition. For me, this Ash Wednesday was a poignant reminder of the universal quest for purpose and fulfillment that transcends religious boundaries and affiliations.

Understanding the Significance of Spring

As nature sheds its wintry coat to embrace the warmth of the sun, we too can shed the burdens of the past and embrace the promise of new beginnings. It’s a season ripe with symbolism, offering opportunities for growth, transformation, and renewal. As Mother Nature ushers in the earth’s awakening, we’re reminded of our capacity for resilience and regeneration, regardless of age or circumstance.

Actionable Steps:

  • Reflect on the symbolism of spring: Take time to ponder the metaphorical significance of the season’s renewal and growth.
  • Ask yourself: What burdens from the past can I release? How can I embrace new beginnings and opportunities for transformation?
  • Consider nature’s resilience: Reflect on your capacity for regeneration and resilience, regardless of life’s challenges.

Navigating the Journey of Self-Discovery

At this time of life, the quest for meaning takes on added significance. It’s a time of reflection, as we sift through the sands of time, seeking clarity and purpose. Self-discovery becomes a journey of exploration, as we uncover hidden passions and revisit forgotten dreams. What once seemed immutable may now appear transient.

Actionable Steps:

  • Engage in reflective practices: Set aside moments for introspection and contemplation, allowing yourself to sift through life’s complexities.
  • Explore hidden passions: Reconnect with activities or interests that bring you joy and fulfillment, even if they’ve been dormant for years.
  • Embrace life’s fluidity: Accept that your sense of purpose and identity may evolve and be open to embracing new narratives and possibilities.

Embracing Change and Redirection

Change is inevitable, yet it is often met with trepidation and resistance. In our 60s and beyond, we may find ourselves confronting a host of transitions – retirement, empty nesting, loss of loved ones – each demanding a recalibration of our sense of self and identity. Embracing change requires courage and resilience. Whether embarking on a second career, pursuing lifelong passions, or simply embracing a slower pace of life, redirection offers a pathway to renewed purpose and vitality.

Actionable Steps:

  • Cultivate courage and resilience: Recognize that change is inevitable and often brings growth, even if it’s uncomfortable at first.
  • Explore new opportunities: Consider what new paths or experiences you may want to pursue, whether it’s a second career, a creative endeavor, or a fun new hobby.
  • Embrace a mindset of renewal: View redirection as an opportunity for renewed purpose and vitality, rather than as a setback or limitation.

Cultivating Relationships

At its core, the quest for meaning is intertwined with our connections to others and the communities in which we belong. Whether through familial bonds, friendships, or shared experiences, human connection enriches our lives. In an increasingly divided world, nurturing these connections becomes even more important. As we journey through life’s seasons, we may find solace in the embrace of community, drawing strength from the bonds that unite us.

Actionable Steps:

  • Prioritize meaningful connections: Invest time and energy in nurturing relationships with loved ones and community members.
  • Share experiences and support: Offer a listening ear, provide encouragement, and share meaningful experiences with those around you.
  • Reach out to a long-lost friend or family member. So often what estranged us is no longer important and carries less meaning.

Identifying Meaning

Determining what holds significance in our lives is essential for navigating our journey with intentionality and purpose. Is it relationships, personal growth, or contribution to society? Defining our values and priorities allows us to align our actions with our aspirations, guiding us toward a life of fulfillment and authenticity.

Actionable Steps:

  • Reflect on personal values: Consider what truly matters to you and what you want to prioritize in your life.
  • Align actions with aspirations: Evaluate whether your daily choices and activities align with your core values and aspirations.
  • Seek clarity and intentionality: Take deliberate steps to live a life that reflects your deepest values and sense of purpose.

Serving Others

Engaging in acts of service and kindness is a powerful way to cultivate meaning and purpose in our lives. Whether through volunteering, mentoring, or simply offering a helping hand, contributing to the well-being of others brings a profound sense of fulfillment and connection.

Actionable Steps:

  • Identify service opportunities: Look for ways to contribute to the well-being of others, whether through volunteering, mentoring, or acts of kindness.
  • Share your time and talents: Offer your skills, knowledge, and resources to support those in need and make a positive impact in your community.
  • Cultivate empathy and compassion: Seek to understand the experiences and needs of others, approaching service with a heart full of empathy and nonjudgement.

Spring is a bit different for me now. Having moved north, winters are long and snowy, although the latter is changing. I’m only here because of family.

It’s a state not known for its friendliness and at 75, way too hard to make friends here. I’ve lived in lots of states and never encountered that before. Typical of New England definitely. If you can last five or so years, the friends you make here are for life (or so I am told). Spring is always exciting. Time to clean up the yard from the nor’easters. I already see green under my flowers so we are a few months away from blooming.

Your article reminds me that following this advise is not automatic. I need to take the time to reflect and make some decisions for myself. Its time to look deep and redefine what my inner being truly is. Thank you 💖

Jensy

This is also sound advice for those of us who are in the transition from summer to autumn.

Thank you for this reminder, Diane, that time and reflection are necessary steps in crafting a satisfying and sustainable path. Since retiring last year, I keep overwhelming myself with “shoulds” and feeling a sense of urgency to “do it all.” Its exhausting. Taking your advice and allowing myself to actually discern the best way forward feels right. And letting go of all of the “shoulds” is probably a good idea too.

Hi Marin, I always say “baby steps!” Good luck on your journey.

@MarinShanley, a friend of mine was going to write a book called “The Tyranny of the Shoulds”…we are all victims of this!
