I’m a big believer in positive aging. As we get a little older, I think that it’s important to remember that it’s what the inside that really counts.
At the same time, I still love makeup. In fact, I don’t see these two perspectives as being in conflict. The more we learn to love and accept ourselves on the inside, the more willing we will be to embrace bold fashion styles and makeup techniques that represent our personalities. Do you agree?
But, this raises an interesting question. When it comes to makeup for older women, is it possible to go too far? When I asked the members of our community what they thought the biggest mistakes older women make when it comes to makeup, “wearing too much” was the most common answer. The second most popular response was “There are no mistakes. Just do whatever feels right.” So, we seem to be split down the middle.
To help resolve this debate, I turned to my good friend Ariane Poole. In a recent interview, I asked her to apply her decades of experience as a makeup artist to the question of whether it’s possible to go too far with our makeup after 60. I also asked her to share her boldest makeup tips for older women.
I hope that you enjoy the show. Please give it a watch and don’t forget to join the conversation afterwards. Enjoy the Show!
During our interview, Ariane explains that makeup, if applied correctly, can help women to fight back against aging stereotypes. She also rejects the notion that women of a “certain age” should stop being bold or dramatic with their appearance.
The trick, as she explains, is to use boldness to enhance your true personality. If you try too hard, your bold look may actually end up looking phony and silly. At the end of the day, it’s really about making sure that your makeup and fashion choices match your personality.
Next, Ariane goes on to provide some specific tips for applying makeup to the various parts of your face. These are a bit tricky to explain in text, so, I highly encourage you to watch the video to get all the details.
Many of us consider our eyes to be our best features. Oh, sure, at age 60, we may have more than our share of laughter lines, but, this isn’t a bad thing!
If you want to be a bit bolder with your eye makeup, Ariane’s advice is to avoid solid blocks of color. Instead, she suggests using shimmer shades with a bit of punch.
If you are having your picture taken, you can afford to be even bolder. So, get out your mascara and give your eyes a bold look. You may even want to add a bit of glitter from Ariane’s famous black glitter pencil.
As early as our 30s, many of us start to lose the pigment in our skin. By the time we reach our 60s, this effect if pretty noticeable. So, if you haven’t tried blush or foundation before, Ariane says that now may be the best time to get started.
Ariane suggests choosing a cream blush that blends naturally. In addition, she says that you may want to try going a little darker than you have done in the past.
As we age, our lips tend to lose their color. As a result, Ariane explains that we may need to try a darker lipstick shade, especially in the winter. When it comes to lips, “bold,” doesn’t mean “dark” or “garish.” Instead, Ariane says that you should look for a lipstick shade that is just enough to highlight the shallow, lighter lip tone that older women are blessed with.
If there is one thing that I have learned from my many conversations with Ariane it’s that makeup should be fun. If anything, older women should feel free to be bolder than at any other point in our lives. After all, we don’t have anything to prove. As a result, we are free to pick clothes and makeup that match our personalities perfectly.
