When you think about the term “reinventing yourself,” you probably imagine people who made big changes in their lives. You may know people who quit their jobs to start their own businesses. Or, perhaps you remember news stories about sky-diving 90-year-olds or weight-lifters in their 70s.
Reading about these stories is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s wonderful to celebrate the accomplishments of older adults. We all need “heroes” to look up to. On the other hand, watching amazing people doing amazing things can actually prevent us from reaching our potential.
To avoid this, we need to remind ourselves that reinvention is a personal process. Not everyone wants to be a weight-lifter at age 77. But, each of us can reinvent ourselves in our own way.
The truth is that reinvention is seldom flashy or immediate. Most of the women in our community who reinvented themselves after 60 didn’t appear in the newspaper. Instead, they quietly got in shape or bravely moved abroad in retirement. They started blogs and pursued their passions. This doesn’t make their accomplishments insignificant. Quite the opposite!
So, today, I’d love to celebrate your stories of reinvention. I hope that this will inspire all of us, myself included, to reach our own potential. I can’t wait to hear about your passions.
