At the age of 60, Lou Murcado finds himself surpassing world records. On June 17, the 1984 Olympian determined to complete 51 triathlons in 51 days and Sunday he did just that.
While most people would be satisfied with earning a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records, Murcado has much bigger goals: 60 triathlons in 60 consecutive days, and most important to him, raising funds for children with cancer and other illnesses.
Furthermore, he plans to dare kids to dream big dreams and to find the determination within to face the obstacles that they need to overcome. His organization, Tri4Kids, wants to bring awareness to childhood diseases and physical fitness for those who are athletically challenged.
As an athlete, Murcado knows the benefits of physical fitness, setting goals, dreaming big, and working hard. He is passionate about helping children but also wants to encourage senior adults to embrace the chapter of life they are in and to never put limits on themselves.
“I want people to see age is no barrier,” said Murcado in an interview with the Toms River Patch.
After completing his 60th triathlon in 60 days, this café manager from Point Pleasant, New Jersey will begin looking for children to help with the $100,000 that he is trying to raise.
In what he calls a “mini Make a Wish program”, Tri4Kids hopes to bring smiles to children’s faces and opportunities to kids who might not otherwise engage in athletic endeavors. Murcado hopes that these opportunities will create healthy habits in children which will continue to develop their minds and their self-esteem.
The list of charities that Murcado will be helping as not yet been released but they will include organizations that help children with cancer, cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, and fitness among others.
