What I Learned About Makeup for Women Over 60 from Ariane Poole

By Margaret Manning October 22, 2014 Beauty

If you want to understand the fabulous world of makeup for women over 60, you could do much worse than to talk to a celerity makeup artist. After all, these are the people who get the stars ready for the Oscars and public figures ready for their appearances.

5 Things I Learned About Makeup for Women Over 60 from a Celebrity Makeup Artist

Professional makeup artist, Ariane Poole, has a wonderfully holistic attitude to beauty in general and makeup in particular. During our interview about beauty after 60, she reminded us that women are beautiful at every age.

The problem is that, as we get a little older, we don’t always do the best job of bringing out our inner beauty. On the inside, we are radiant, but, sometimes, we need a little help expressing ourselves.

This is exactly what Ariane aims to do in her work as a professional makeup artist. According to Ariane, there are 5 things that all women over 60 can do to create a holistic beauty regime. It all starts with attitude. Enjoy the show!

Use a Beautiful Attitude to Create a Radiant Look

During our interview, Ariane revealed that even celebrities, who look so confident on the outside, are often just as vulnerable as the rest of us on the inside. When Ariane works with her clients, part of her job is to make them feel comfortable, confident and ready to take on the world. On the surface, this sounds paradoxical. I mean, isn’t makeup supposed to be a mask? Not at all!

According to Ariane, a confident approach to life is more important than any lipstick or face cream.

This makes a lot of sense to me. Our appearance changes in so many ways when we face the world with optimism and confidence. With the right attitude, our posture improves, our smile brightens and our skin gains a natural glow. So, if you want to look your best on the outside, take a long hard look at what it happening on the inside. Be positive and never underestimate the power of a smile.

Eat Your Way to Healthier, More Radiant Skin

Beauty comes from the inside in more ways than one. Not only is your attitude critical to looking your best after 60, but, what you eat and how you treat your body also makes a huge difference!

Ariane puts a lot of weight on nutrition and exercise when it comes to looking your best. Instead of buying the latest “anti-aging” creams or potions, Ariane recommends that women have a regular exercise regime.

Whether you like yoga or walking, Pilates or snowshoeing, exercise is critical to achieving a great look on the outside and a positive attitude on the inside.

She also reminded us that, no matter how many creams and powders you apply, your skin will look dull and grey if you are not getting the right balance of nutrients. So, before you try to cover everything up, take a look in your fridge and see if you have the right foods for keeping your skin healthy.

Use Supplements Wisely

There are many reasons that your body might not be getting the nutrients it needs, even if you think that you have a “healthy diet.” For starters, unless you are lucky enough to be able to buy your food from organic sources, it may not have the nutritional value that it did just a few decades ago. This is why Ariane and I discussed the wonderful world of supplements for women over 60.

Of course, everyone’s body is different, so, it makes sense to check with your doctor before adding a new supplement to your diet. What’s clear is that there are more options than ever for giving your body the nutrients that it needs.

When it comes to makeup for women over 60, we think a lot about what we put on our bodies. Ariane says we need to also remember to think about what we put in our bodies.

Enhance Your Natural Beauty with the Right Skin Care

Ariane’s first few tips focused on getting beautiful from the inside out. Then, she turned her attention to what we can do to improve the physical appearance of our skin from the outside.

Specifically, Ariane mentioned that she loves to create her own simple and natural skin care products, using only materials from around the home. For example, she said that a mixture of olive oil and brown sugar can make an excellent exfoliation product.

As I discussed in a previous article, there are also several preventative measures that us older women can take to keep our skin healthy. These include stopping smoking, staying out of the sun and using natural products.

Use the Right Makeup Products and Techniques

Finally, Ariane explained how the world of makeup has changed in recent years with the introduction of new products that can help your skin to breath, shine and glow.

Makeup doesn’t need to be thick and heavy. Instead, primers, highlighters, cream blushers and soft concealers can really help to soften and enhance your look.

I highly recommend that you watch the video that is included in this article as it has several makeup tips to help you get the look you want. If you want to get a more comprehensive look at the fabulous world of makeup for older women, you can also check out the makeup video series that Ariane and I shot together.

Perhaps most importantly, Ariane reminds us that no one needs to wear makeup. If it helps you to feel more confident and you feel that it enhances your inner beauty, then go for it!

Just remember, all of the “anti-aging” nonsense out there is just that… nonsense! Ariane encourages all of the women in the Sixty and Me community to embrace “positive aging” in order to find the happiness that we all deserve.

Do you feel good about your own beauty as an older woman. Or is one of these 5 things a little out of balance? What do you think is the essence of good makeup for women over 60? Please let us know in the comments below.
